On Saturday, October 20th, 2007, at 1:00 pm the City of San Diego will
join other 82 cities in 15 different countries in opening up
the eyes and ears of the world to a humanitarian tragedy
unfolding in northern Uganda. October 20th is the official
GuluWalk Day all over the world, and we are aiming to gather at
least 500 San Diegans at Balboa Park at 6th and Laurel and walk in solidarity
with the Night Commuters of northern Uganda. GuluWalk is
focused on supporting the abandoned children of northern
Uganda. Even if there is peace tomorrow, there is so much more
we can do to raise our voices for peace and to be a partner in
the future of the Acholi children.

A war has been going on in northern Uganda between the LRA
(Lord's Resistance Army Rebel force) and the Ugandan
government since 1989 largely unnoticed by the mainstream media
and the international community. The LRA as well as the Ugandan
government uses abduction to swell its ranks: it abducts
children 4-13 years old and either turns them into sex slaves
or slave laborers or child soldiers. Humanitarian
organizations estimate that 90-95% of the rebel force is
comprised of captured children. These children were abducted
because the government failed/refused to protect them.

The original GuluWalk started with just two people in July of
2005 and has now grown into a worldwide movement for peace. The
GuluWalk was inspired by the gripping tale of the 'night
commuters' and while the night commuting has stopped, the need
to promote peace, dismantle the IDP (Internally Displaced
People) Camps, and step forward for these abandoned children.

The GuluWalk is no longer an effort by just two people, but is
now being made possible by the support of so many volunteers
worldwide and the experience and compassion of numerous partner
organizations.

I invite you to be a part of this event because I believe you
not only find these children?s situation abhorrent, but also
the LRA must be stopped and the government of Uganda must be
held accountable for the safety of their citizens?especially
the children. I hope you find the time, the reason, and the
belief to participate in the GuluWalk this year.
